After choosing the flavor of cake
for their Hawaii wedding, the bride and groom
must decide what filling to use. A filling symbolizes
the mortar between the bricks of the marital structure
you are building, that quality which provides stability
and permanence to the house of married life. What
quality do you, as a couple, want to be a strong factor
in strengthening your marriage? What quality seems
most desirable or important and how do you include
that quality in a wedding cake? One way is through
design, but another is through flavor.
Different flavors sometimes have a connection to
a 'deeper meaning'. For instance, on the website www.mastersessences.com
(a flower essence website), coconut represents the
quality of 'upliftment', strawberry represents the
quality of 'dignity', raspberry represents the quality
of 'kindheartedness', apple represents the quality
of 'healthfulness', blackberry represents the quality
of 'purity of thought', cherry represents the quality
of 'cheerfulness', banana represents the quality of
'humility', almond represents the quality of 'self-control',
peach represents the quality of 'selflessness', pineapple
represents the quality of 'self assuredness', orange
represents the quality of 'joy', and date represents
the quality of 'sweetness & tenderness'. Do any
of these qualities speak to your hearts and to your
commitment to one another?
The frosting is the canvas for the baker-as-artist
and is the means to create whatever symbolic message
or design you want for your Hawaii wedding. The choices
you must make include what type of frosting (buttercream,
boiled icing, candy clay, cream cheese, fondant, ganache,
etc.), as well as what color. The color should either
enhance whatever decorations are used on the cake
(be a lovely background shade that highlights the
decorations) or should make a statement all its own.
Again, think about what forces of nature (e.g, the
possible wind and sun's heat of a Hawaii
beach wedding) the frosting may have to withstand
- and for how long - before the cake-cutting ceremony
begins and choose your frosting accordingly. Obviously,
if the cake-cutting takes place indoors, you will
not have to consider the weather factor.
